Pebbles Sketch Layout- Never Grow Up

Each month there are usually two Page Maps sketches that the Pebbles design team uses to create fun layouts.  This month I was assigned this cute sketch.

And here's my layout.

I haven't used Sunnyside in a while, and with the weather getting warmer I wanted to pull it out.  It's so happy and cute.  This is my daughter at the playground (don't you love iPhone pictures?) and as I watched her that day I got a little emotional thinking about how much I love her at this age.  I love everything about her and I wish I could freeze time and keep her at this point in her life.  But I know that each year I'll love her more and more as I watch her grow.

The flowers were cut from the Cricut Bloom cartridge and the title was made with a couple of fonts on my Silhouette, welded together, and then offset twice for the shadows.

Pebbles "Let It Snow" Christmas Frame

Three days until Christmas and I thought I was so ready.
We (Well- I- alone- in the cold...) shopped on Black Friday and got just about everything on everyone's lists, so then I sat back and relaxed, knowing that we were done.

Well, turns out we're not done.  And so I'll be bringing the kids out shopping for the next couple of days.
We also just took the photo for our Christmas card last night.  Maybe I'll make it a "Happy New Year" card.
How about you?  I'll admit- I'm a procrastinator.  I leave things until the last minute, but I always get them done on time :)  Maybe I work better under pressure.

Anyway...
Pebbles challenged us to create holiday cards and gifts without using holiday papers and embellishments, since they don't have a Christmas line this year.  No problem.

I dusted off my Cricut for this one.  Really, it had dust on it.
I need to use it more I guess.
Isn't it cute???
That darling snowman is from the Winter Frolic cartridge.  He's full of dimensional foam adhesive.
Then I cut various shaped snowflakes from the Winter Woodland cartridge.

Wondering where the "SNOW" word art came from?
It's Thickers that I stuck onto Doodlebug Sugar Coated cardstock and trimmed around with my scissors.
Then I stuck that onto a poppy parade piece of cardstock from Stampin' Up and trimmed again.  The white and red are separated by foam dimensional adhesive.

The other letters on the banners are Thickers as well.  That same pack has the little "burst" that's in the center of the "O."  I thought it looked a bit like a snowflake.

The banners are from the Hip Hip Hooray collection.  It's a banner kit that comes with tons of banners in different shapes and colors so you can make your own custom banner.  I love that little kit.  I need to get another one. I popped them up with dimensional foam adhesive and then adhered the twine to the blue paper with liquid glue.

The snowman's made with Doodlebug crushed velvet cardstock in white, and the pearls and twine are also Doodlebug.  The picture frame I got at Hobby Lobby and spray painted white.

And the little "snowball" is a dimensional circle from the Hip Hip Hooray collection.  The hills are hand cut.

Hope I inspired you to go out and make some homemade holiday decor.
Or maybe you already did- since you're not a procrastinator like me.

Wish me luck on my last minute shopping- and Happy Holidays!

Winter Banner- Carta Bella- for Heartland Paper Company

I occasionally do projects for my awesome little local scrapbook store, Heartland Paper Company, in Bountiful, Utah.  This month, I got the opportunity to use the brand new Carta Bella "Winter Fun" collection.
Carta Bella is a new manufacturer and is a sister company to Echo Park.  They make fabulous, and absolutely beautiful products.

You know how much I love making altered projects and home decor for my design teams.
I adore patterned paper and embellishments, and I think I love doing home decor items so much because scrapbook pages get put away into albums, but home decor items get to stay out and be displayed, and lots and lots of people get to see them.

The day I photographed this banner, it was so SO windy!
I had to photograph it outside on my fence because my house was filled to the brim with Halloween decor and this was a last minute (literally) last minute assignment-
I had the hardest time getting shots before the gusts came through again and blew the pennants up.

Isn't this collection stunning?  It's gorgeous!

Do you recognize the font?  It's from the Winter Wonderland Cricut cartridge.  The snowflakes were done using the Winter Lace cartridge.  There are cute little 3D snowflakes on the cartridge!

Here are some close-ups of the pennants.

The jewels are My Mind's Eye "Follow Your Dreams by Rhonna Farrer" jewels in baby blue, light pink, magenta, and gold.

The burlap I bought by the yard at Hancock Fabrics, and the ribbons and twine can all be found at Heartland Paper Company.

I told them I love it and I want it back when they're done with it.
Hopefully I get my wish :)

Have a great weekend!

Imaginisce Design Team Challenge- "Boo" Card

Imaginisce likes to do a "Design Team Challenge" every year and throw us all for a loop :)
This year, our challenge was to create a layout or card that had these criteria:

  1. an irregular shape (no circles, squares, rectangles, etc)
  2. at least three different patterned papers
  3. uses the I-Top tool
  4. and has the color orange
So.... after looking through my collections I was relieved to pull out the "Monster Mash" collection!
The orange was covered.  The rest came together actually pretty fast and I had the card made a half hour after coming up with the concept.

I used the I-Top tool to pop up the little pumpkin by punching a second pumpkin out of the patterned paper and making an I-Top brad, and then placing it over the pumpkin that's on the paper.

The tombstone and grass were cut using the Cricut "Happy Hauntings" cartridge.

And then the ghost is a cardstock sticker popping out from inside, and the bat is attached to a pin and is adhered to the back. The bat and the "Boo" are both canvas stickers.

Thanks for looking!  And see more of the designers take on this challenge on the Imaginisce Blog HERE.

Pebbles layout, Doodlebug banner, and Imaginisce tags! Whew!

I'm BACK!!!! YAY!!!!
I've been working with blogger for a week trying to figure out why I can't post new posts.
It's all fixed.  Hallelujah!

So... you've missed three new projects and we've got some catching up to do.

First up:  My first official Pebbles Design Team project!

"You Are My Sunshine"
I had my first official DT Intro on the Pebbles Blog.   This is the layout I made for the occasion :)
You can see the post and learn more about me HERE.
I used the Sunnyside collection for this layout.  The 3D flowers were cut using my Silhouette Cameo and files from Lori Whitlock in the Silhouette online store.
I stitched the loop-de-loops on my sewing machine, and added lots of dimension using American Crafts foam dots.  These are by far the best dimensional foam adhesive I've ever used.  And you know I love foam dots!

Next up:
Occasionally I do design work for my local scrapbook store, Heartland Paper Company (Bountiful, Utah).
They asked me to create something cute but simple using Doodlebug's new Haunted Manor collection.
Yes- I was very excited to be asked to use Doodlebug :)

So I made this banner for them, and then Lori asked me if we could put it on the Doodlebug Blog, too.
Why- of course you can! ;)

"Spooky" Halloween Banner

The letters and frames were cut using the Happy Hauntings Cricut cartridge.
You can see it on the Doodlebug Blog HERE.

And finally:
Imaginisce is showing off their great stamps this week on the Imaginisce Blog, so I used the Christmas Cheer stamps and made some cute little Christmas gift tags.  You can see them HERE.

I stamped the images with Staz-On Jet Black ink, and then watercolored the images using an Aqua Painter and Stampin' Up!'s water-based inks.  Then I cut them out and adhered them with dimensional foam adhesive and embellished them more with Imaginisce's Rhinestuds Hot Rocks and the I-Rock tool.

Hope that makes up for the time I've been gone.

I missed you all, too!  And you're nice comments.
Hopefully blogger is nice to me from now on. :)

Thanks for visiting!

4th of July Celebrations with Imaginisce

Over at Imaginisce this week, we're celebrating the 4th of July with fun party ideas.
I'm excited to show you the projects I made using Imaginisce's Hello Cupcake and Animal Crackers lines.

I love to throw parties, and little details like these really add a lot.
I created these using the "Stand and Salute" Cricut Cartridge, as well as some Lifestyle Crafts dies (pinwheel, rosettes, straw flags) and the I-Rock to add some bling.

What are fireworks without some sparkle, right?
My kids were over the moon about these treats, and they've already eaten them all :)
I have to go buy more for tomorrow's celebration.

My favorite are the soda bottles.  What about you?
See what the rest of the design team has in store this week on the Imaginisce Blog,
and for those in the U.S..... Happy 4th of July tomorrow!!!
Hope you have a great celebration!!!

Vinyl with Brookie Craft

I recently did some design work for Brookie Craft, a vinyl and screenprinting company.
They asked me to create some projects for marketing, their blog, facebook, and print ads.  It was a fun opportunity, and their vinyl is top quality so it was a dream to work with.

I created lots of projects, but I'm not sure if I can share them just yet :)
This one, however, was added to their facebook page today, so I guess it's okay to share.
I made a car table for my neighbor's son's birthday.
We worked on this together for days.  It was definitely a two person job!
I used several Cricut cartridges for this project, including My Community, Locker Talk, Winter Woodland, and Pooh & Friends.  There may have been more, I can't remember.
I used my gypsy to weld roads from the My Community cartridge to get the dimensions and angles I needed for the table.

The table itself came from IKEA.

You'll see another of my vinyl projects soon in a print ad for Brookie Craft in the Northridge Publishing magazines (Cards, Scrapbook Trends, Bead Trends, Create:Idea Books, Cricut Magazine).

Hopefully I'll get to show you the rest of my projects on my blog soon.  Until then, seriously consider checking out Brookie Crafts' vinyl.  It's the highest quality I've used.  You'll love it (and I'm not being paid to say that :)

Boys Will Be Boys- Doodlebug "Boys Only" Collection

Doodlebug has come out with what I think is their best collection yet- "Boys Only!"
I LOVE this line.  Guitars, gears, arrows, music notes, soda, stars, so many cool "boys only" icons.
The colors are spot-on and the designs are awesome!

For this layout I used my Cricut Expression and the Accent Essentials cartridge to create the "gears."  The accents are almost all stickers from the Icons Cardstock Stickers sheet.

These are old photos of my boys and their cousins at a "boys only" party, complete with laser tag, arcade games, water boats, golf, and race cars.  They had a blast!

Doodlebug's also got some new embellishments, including star shaped buttons, mini pearls and more fun colors of their popular Doodletwine!  The letters are Doodlebug's hopscotch alphabet stickers in swimming pool and lily white.

Thanks for visiting!  See lots more from the "Boys Only" collection on the Doodlebug Blog this week.

Imaginisce for Core'dinations Cardstock and a Giveaway!

This week Imaginisce teamed up with Core'dinations Cardstock to create some fun projects.
We're playing with Core'dinations' fabulous color core cardstock, and they're playing with our I-Rock tool.

Fun fun fun.

I'm in love with this cardstock.  It's super heavy duty, the texture's beautiful, and it embosses and distresses so perfectly.  There are tons of colors to choose from, too, all with a beautiful color in the core that comes through when it's torn, embossed or distressed.
You can see all of the Imaginisce Design Team's projects this week on the Imaginisce Blog.

I decided to make two cards with the Hippity Hop collection.

The scalloped oval is a Lifestyle Crafts nesting die, as well as the oval on top of it.  I die-cut the egg with the Picturesque Cricut cartridge, cut the top with some decorative edge scissors, and covered it with strips of embossed Core'dinations cardstock.  I embossed the strips with some skinny Cuttlebug folders.  The designs on the embossing folders reminded me of an easter egg, so there you go!

Isn't the colored core great?
This next card I decided to call "Showered With Love"

The clouds are from the Pooh and Friends Cricut cartridge and are embossed with the Cuttlebug D'Vine Swirls embossing folder.

Both cards were sanded over the embossed areas to show the colored core.

Thanks for visiting and don't forget to subscribe to my blog for the chance to win an I-Top tool package.

Space Party, Adventures in Cricut Cake-ing, and a Cricut Cake tutorial!

We've had a fun week around here.  We had a birthday!
And I've been making some changes to the craft room, so stay tuned on Wednesday, I'll be showing you pictures and announcing an Imaginisce Tool Package giveaway for one of my blog followers, so join my blog for a chance to win!
Yesterday we had a "Space Party" at our house for my son's birthday.
We had a "blast" :) Ha ha.
I used the Cricut Events Space Party cartridge for the decor and treats, and I think it's one of my new favorites.  I love the "interactive" designs on the cartridge.  It's not just shapes and pictures, it's 3D objects, and interactive cards, and super cool icons.

As soon as I saw the cartridge images I thought it would be cool to have aliens coming out of the cupcakes.  I was going to do the icing grey like brains, but I drew the line with gross and went with cool "UFO" cupcake wrappers.  The wrappers were cut at 1 1/4" and were a little big.  The alien heads were 2."

This little guy was my centerpiece.  I cut him and his space ship out at 3.75" (which is fit to page size for the space ship- I have no idea where Provo Craft got that sizing from).  The black detail is cut at 3.75 also, which only fits on a 12x24 mat, unless you break the image apart on your Gypsy or in Craft Room.

The invitation is fun because you pull on the fire and the inside of the card comes out.  The envelope is also from the cartridge.

All the kids got an alien mask (except the girls, who refused to wear one) so the boys chased the girl "humans" around for the whole party, which I don't think the girls minded a bit :)

I actually cut the images opposite colors of what the cartridge said so that I could use the green eyes for my balloons.  I also did the cupcakes opposite because I knew I didn't want thin little black eye details to have to deal with.

And here's the cupcake tower, my favorite part.  I have to be honest- this endeavor was a beast.  I'll tell you more about how I made them and the Cricut Cake below.  I did a step-by-step tutorial when I made these because it was my first time using the machine.  I thought it was worth documenting.  And that way you can avoid the mistakes I made, right?

The wrappers are great, too because they have a bottom!  You can use them as treat cups, too, or whatever you want to put in them.

The alien balloons were part of an activity.  I told the kids they could "hunt" them and shoot Nerf guns at them.

The kids all took one home.

Here's the creepy alien clan :)

Here's the birthday boy.  What a handsome photo :)

 Alien invasion!!!

So if you're curious about the Cricut Cake, read on, because here's my step-by-step tutorial on what TO DO and what NOT TO DO when it comes to this tricky little machine.

A few years ago I started doing cakes for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, etc out of my home.  I used to painstakingly cut details out by hand with an exacto knife for all of my cakes.  Cakes like this one....
which took hours because of all the hand cutting, so I eventually quit doing cakes because they took so long and were so dang hard to do by myself.

Which is why I was so intrigued by the idea of this machine.
I finally got one not too long ago because they're so cheap now I couldn't pass it up, but I didn't have an opportunity to use it until yesterday.  It comes with a DVD, which is good, and then I found lots of videos on You Tube that were helpful (and some not so helpful)  so I thought it wouldn't be too hard.

HA!  I was so wrong :)

Let the adventure begin.....

I made my aliens out of fondant because gumpaste dries rock hard and is used for delicate decorations and isn't something you'd want to eat.  Fondant dries kind of chewy, like nougat.
The machine comes with this dusting tool.  You can dust your counter top with powdered sugar, but I find that as the fondant warms up when you knead it, the powdered sugar makes it stickier, so I use cornstarch.  Cornstarch is the only way I've ever been able to keep the fondant from sticking to the countertop while rolling it out.

I used Wilton brand fondant because I have a craft store down the street so it was convenient.  I have to tell you I was pleasantly surprised.  Wilton fondant used to be horrible tasting and smelled like motor oil.  It's fabulous now, the consistency is great, and it tastes like fondant (go figure) and it's comparatively priced with the fancy brands.  If you have access to a cake store, I like Pettinice or Satin Ice brand fondant.

Fondant isn't ready to use right out of the package.  It has to be kneaded.  If you don't cover your countertop with anything, it will stick to the counter.  There are also kneading mats, but they also have to be dusted or the fondant will stick to those as well.

It's worth taking Wilton's classes if you've never used fondant before to cover a cake.  It's tricky at first.  For littler things like this, you can research kneading online.  I use both hands and press down with the heel of my hands into the fondant like I'm doing CPR, then turn the fondant 1/4 turn, fold it onto itself toward me, and press down again.  When folding try not to get big air pockets inside, or when you roll it out you'll have air bubbles.

Once it's kneaded and soft, you can begin to roll it out.  For little jobs a regular dusted rolling pin is fine.  This type of rolling pin is for large sheets of fondant.

When rolling fondant, the best thing I figured out is not to press the fondant into the countertop when rolling it, but rather using light pressure and rolling in all directions getting the fondant ball to flatten out.  If you press more lightly the fondant won't stick to the countertop much.

Roll it thin.  If it's too thick the machine will tear it apart, and if it's too thin it will tear.  I'd say with fondant 1/8 of an inch is too thick.  Go thinner than that.  Gumpaste is a whole other story, that stuff you roll as thin as possible.

Then you'll brush a thin layer of shortening on the mat to get it to stick to the mat.

If your fondant is too hard because of age or because you kneaded too much cornstarch into it, add shortening to it and knead it again.  Shortening is what is used to soften fondant, or if it's too soft, dust powdered sugar onto it and knead it to get it more firm.

After it's rolled out, slide the mat under the fondant.  (it's easier than picking the fondant up).
(pretend that the entire mat is covered- this was my first practice run to see if it would work).
Now you'll want to trim away any fondant that's outside of the cutting lines.  Use a ruler and a plastic trimmer tool (in the photo on the right) to trim off the excess.  If you don't trim enough, fondant will get into your rollers.

Now's the tricky part.

The Cricut DVD doesn't talk about fondant.  I found out why.  Fondant needs to be at some magical perfect consistency in order for the machine to cut it.

If you put it into the machine right now, it's too soft and this happens.

People suggest putting the fondant sheets into the freezer for 15 minutes before cutting, but in the cake world, you don't freeze fondant.  It'll sweat when it warms back up and becomes a sticky mess.  So I didn't want to try that.

Another lady on You Tube said that she keeps her fondant sheets out overnight and cuts them the next day.  The problem with that is that fondant will dry and get crumbly or crack.

I don't know why, but I trusted her and decided to try it her way.  It didn't work either, as you'll see

So next time, if I try this again with fondant, I'll let it sit for an hour or two and see what happens, or I'll just use frosting sheets, which is what everyone else does, and they're ready to cut right out of the package.

If you want to color your fondant or gumpaste first, use cake coloring, not grocery store food coloring because regular food coloring is water based.  You can find cake coloring gels at craft and cake decorating stores.  Wilton makes some in little jars.

Use a TINY amount, like a DROP at a time, and knead.  It goes a LONG way.  You can always add more.

You pull it like taffy and knead it again until it's the color you want.  Then follow the same steps as before.

Here are my sheets ready.  One's black and one's green.  They're covered in cornstarch so they look lighter than they are.  I didn't care if the black was dark because it was going on the back, but if you want black fondant, I suggest buying it already black.  Same with red.  Those two colors are impossible to make yourself.
Or with black you can buy chocolate fondant and add black color to it.

Here's what happens when you leave the fondant overnight and cut it.  It's so dry it cracks.

Strike one.

Here's what happens if you roll your fondant too thick.  The blade drags across it every time it cuts a new line and tears it to shreads.

Strike two.

See the nice diagonal lines?  Awesome.

At this point I was ready to throw in the towel.  But I tried and tried again.  After seriously hours, I ended up with enough aliens that I succeeded.  Try it at home and tell me what works for you.  I think pre-made frosting sheets or gumpaste is what I'm using from now on, but we'll see.

Here's a shot of the front of the machine after cutting.  There was cornstarch and shortening all over the cutting area, rollers, door, EVERYTHING.  The back was a mess, too.  It's a good thing the Cricut Cake is stainless steel and water wipe-able.  I would NEVER do this with my Cricut Expression.  EVER.  You'd ruin it.  And it's not food safe, either, so you'd give people metal poisoning or they'd eat whatever glue and residue is on the machine.

The Cricut Cake's super cheap, do it the safe way.

Here they are, ready to be put into the frosting on the cupcakes, and then devoured.
Wow...
With practice and trial and error I think this will be a fun machine.

That was the longest post ever.  And the longest project ever.  I'm tired.
I need a nap.

Have a great day!
Stay tuned for a post on Wednesday showing you my craft room and it's new additions, plus an Imaginisce Tool package giveaway for one of my blog followers.  So follow me for your chance to win!!!
